Job Summary

This position leads MCNC’s Cybersecurity Services architecture and engineering team to design, implement, and operate managed cybersecurity services for MCNC’s community of K-12 schools, Community Colleges, public and private Universities, state and local governments, and non-profit healthcare institutions. This includes conducting research, evaluating, developing, and integrating technology solutions and processes. This position provides the opportunity to solve challenging cybersecurity problems across a variety of environments to make world-class cybersecurity protections affordable and accessible to the community that MCNC serves in North Carolina.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Develop and maintain the roadmap for MCNC’s cybersecurity services portfolio. In this role you will:
    1. Work with MCNC’s constituents to understand community needs and challenges.
    2. Maintain a detailed understanding of the evolving cyber threat landscape including current and future threats impacting MCNC’s customer community.
    3. Work with MCNC’s business leadership to design the service roadmap for the future of integrated services to deliver effective, high-value cybersecurity protections.
  2. Develop, implement, and integrate cybersecurity services by leading collaboration among cross-functional teams to enhance MCNC’s Vital Cyber services portfolio. In this role you will:
    1. Utilize design, engineering, and problem-solving skills to integrate technology and create new solutions supporting MCNC’s Cybersecurity Services business.
    2. Identify, evaluate, purchase, and implement technology solutions to enhance the cybersecurity services portfolio.
    3. Deploy and manage systems and software, automate business and technical processes, and ensure that technology solutions effectively support service objectives.
    4. Provide leadership for and oversight of the development, implementation, and operations of service-enabling technology solutions.
  3. Coordinate and maintain technology systems and services for effective and efficient service operations. In this role you will:
    1. Manage effective communications across internal teams and external customers.
    2. Support existing systems and services to ensure service health.
    3. Coordinate the implementation of necessary support and business processes.
    4. Develop and maintain service-specific technical documentation and training materials.
    5. Collaborate with MCNC’s Security Operations team to enable service delivery excellence for MCNC’s cybersecurity services.
  4. Assist MCNC’s customers in accessing and utilizing MCNC’s cybersecurity services.
  5. Provide expertise and feedback to MCNC constituents on cybersecurity and other technology solutions.
  6. Lead and coordinate cybersecurity incident response activities for the Cybersecurity Services team, including troubleshooting, triage, containment, recovery, and documentation.
  7. Personnel Management
    1. In this role, you will manage and oversee the work of the Cybersecurity Services Architecture and Engineering team members.
  8. Provide other organizational assistance. In this role you may be asked to perform the following activities:
    1. Provide expert support to MCNC’s Senior Leadership team for addressing cybersecurity-related issues and incidents.
    2. Provide technical assistance to MCNC’s Security Advisory Consulting services team. This assistance may cover a number of areas, including (but not limited to) vulnerability assessment, secure system configurations, vulnerability remediation, testing deployed security controls, etc. Direct interaction with customers is likely.
    3. Perform additional duties as assigned by the VP, Enterprise IT and Cybersecurity Initiatives.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  1. BS or BA in appropriate technical (Information Security, Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.) or Business Management field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  2. Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing cybersecurity architectures and solutions in a complex IT environment. Experience implementing solutions in a service provider environment is a plus.
  3. Demonstrated experience designing and implementing cybersecurity operations and monitoring and response capabilities at a large scale. This includes experience integrating SIEM / SOAR solutions and defining and implementing monitoring and response use cases for effective cyber protection.
  4. Significant demonstrated experience architecting and implementing large-scale cybersecurity protection services.
  5. Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, protocols, and technologies, including but not limited to firewalls and network security, attack surface management, endpoint protection, malware, security monitoring and security operations, and the evolving cyber-threat landscape.
  6. Significant demonstrated experience in a hands-on systems administration / technology integration role.
  7. Strong organizational and project management skills and experience.
  8. Thorough understanding of and significant practical experience with TCP/IP networking.
  9. Demonstrated experience in leading incident response efforts, with the ability to manage and coordinate response activities in a customer-facing environment.
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, management team, MCNC customers, and vendors. Must be able to deliver written material and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  11. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to address complex business and technical challenges.
  12. Ability to independently make decisions and solve problems while working under pressure.
  13. Ability to work in a responsible and proactive fashion collaboratively or with minimal direct supervision.
  14. Demonstrated success in collaborating across department boundaries to establish positive working relationships and drive successful outcomes without direct control of, or supervision of assets.
  15. Must have a valid driver's license and will be required to drive a company vehicle on company business. Pre-employment and annual MVR checks will be required during your employment with the company for this position in order to be approved to drive a company-owned vehicle.
  16. Background and sex offender checks will be performed for pre-employment and annually during your employment with the company.
  17. This role will be required to adhere to the MCNC Substance Abuse policy, which may include drug/alcohol screening at hire and periodically or randomly during employment.

Preferred Qualifications/Specialties

  1. Experience representing an organization in a customer-facing role.
  2. Experience successfully managing budgets and finances in service delivery.
  3. Demonstrated experience utilizing scripting languages to automate actions between disparate systems using APIs or other interfaces.
  4. At least 5 years of experience in a project / program / service management or service delivery role related to technology services.  Direct experience managing cybersecurity services is a plus.
  5. Team building and development experience. Capable of inspiring and motivating teams, setting a clear vision, fostering collaboration and empowering team members; Strong capacity to recruit, develop, and retain top talent.
  6. Relevant industry certifications (such as CISSP, CISA, CISM, GIAC, PMP, etc.) are a plus.
