Job Summary
This position will monitor and troubleshoot network connectivity services (L3, L2, optical, and fiber-based) for institutions connected to the North Carolina Research and Education (NCREN) network. The position will also ensure functionality and security for MCNC facilities. In support of the NCREN backbone, this position participates in ultimately minimizing network and service downtime. This position reports to the Director of Network Operations and supports NOC and Network Engineering staff. The work contributed by this position directly impacts MCNC’s mission of providing advanced networking services to North Carolina’s Research and Education (R&E) community.Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Perform basic and routine support and monitoring for the Network Operations Center (NOC).
- Provide real-time support and service to MCNC’s clients connected to the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN).
- Field, troubleshoot and escalate trouble calls and email queries.
- Contact vendors, telecom providers, and clients directly in order to troubleshoot and seek out problem resolution.
- Record and track scheduled maintenance, outages, service degradation, and general inquiries from clients via ServiceNow.
- Update network and client information stored in the GlobalNOC database.
- Provide NOC and Network Engineering staff support.
- Performs other assignments/duties as needed.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Current student pursuing an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Network or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
- Basic knowledge of IP networking principles.
- Must be able to work effectively individually as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while balancing multiple priorities successfully.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
- Has an aptitude for learning new technologies.
- Must have a valid driver's license and will be required to drive a company vehicle on company business. Pre-employment and annual MVR checks will be required during your employment with the company for this position in order to be approved to drive a company-owned vehicle.
- Background and sex offender checks will be performed for pre-employment and annually during your employment with the company.
- This role will be required to adhere to the MCNC Substance Abuse policy, which may include drug/alcohol screening at hire and periodically or randomly during employment.
Preferred Qualifications/Specialties
- Hands-on experience with configuring Cisco routers and switches.
- Hands-on experience with physical wiring and cabling.
Pay: Between $17 - $19 per hour (Based on experience and education)
