Senior Cybersecurity Analyst

Security Operations Center - DURHAM, NC - Full Time

Job Summary

This is a senior-level position in MCNC’s cybersecurity operations team. It requires experience with networking, system administration, cybersecurity concepts, and self-reliance to be able to research new concepts as you encounter them. Direct experience as a cybersecurity resource is required. As a senior member of a security operations team, you will identify security issues and take action to proactively protect and remediate known issues on behalf of the community while mentoring other analysts and working to make the team more efficient. You will also work to improve the operating environment by developing and implementing new processes and technologies to improve MCNC’s response capabilities.
 

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Monitor and respond to alerts and events detected and generated by MCNC’s growing portfolio of cybersecurity protection tools. Initial areas of focus will include endpoint protection, vulnerability management, and network security.
  2. Utilize available tools and information sources to proactively hunt across the MCNC operating environment to detect areas of potential concern related to cybersecurity.
  3. Respond to inquiries from the MCNC community regarding potential cybersecurity issues.
  4. Perform security incident response activities, including troubleshooting, triage, containment, recovery, and documentation.
  5. Collaborate with other MCNC departments, including Internal Systems, Network Operations, Network Management, and MCNC’s client consulting teams, to ensure that actions are appropriate and timely.
  6. Recommend and implement improvements to existing processes and technologies to improve overall service delivery.
  7. Continuously research security trends to understand the latest threats affecting the MCNC community and apply those learnings to MCNC’s cybersecurity operations.
  8. Create, review, and refine operational runbooks to support and resolve common tickets.
  9. Act as an escalation point for the operations team, addressing complex and challenging tickets.
  10. Act as a force multiplier by helping elevate the entire team’s operational capabilities.
  11. Ability to work nights, weekends, and on-call rotation as required.
  12. Additional duties as assigned.

Flexible Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Ability to rack and stack network gear as needed, working in a data center environment.
  2. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unaided.
  3. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds aided.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  1. A strong progression throughout multiple Information Technology, Computer Science, or related domains with a history of working as a dedicated cybersecurity resource.
  2. Strong understanding of and experience with networking and networking concepts.
  3. Proficient with Linux/Unix, Mac, and Windows operating systems.
  4. Proficient with supporting Android, ISO, and Chromebooks
  5. Exposure to and experience with the following cybersecurity areas:
    1. Cyber Hygiene
    2. Patch Management
    3. Endpoint Protection
    4. Next-Generation Firewalls
    5. Vulnerability Assessment / Vulnerability Management
    6. Security Monitoring / Intelligence gathering and analysis
  6. Exposure to and experience with one or more of the tools within MCNC’s security stack, such as:
    1. CrowdStrike
    2. Palo Alto
    3. Zscaler
    4. Akamai
    5. LogScale
  7. Experience in Scripting, Automation, API usage, Git, etc.
  8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, management team, MCNC customers, and vendors. Must be able to deliver written material and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  9. Able to work in a responsible and proactive fashion collaboratively or with minimal direct supervision.
  10. Comfortable collaborating across department boundaries to establish positive working relationships and drive operational security improvements without direct control of or supervision of assets.
  11. Must have a valid driver's license and will be required to drive a company vehicle on company business. Pre-employment and annual MVR checks will be required during your employment with the company for this position in order to be approved to drive a company-owned vehicle.
  12. Background and sex offender checks will be performed for pre-employment and annually during your employment with the company.
  13. This role will be required to adhere to the MCNC Substance Abuse policy, which may include drug/alcohol screening at hire and periodically or randomly during employment.

Preferred Qualifications/Specialties

  1. Degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or another related field.
  2. Relevant industry certifications from CompTIA, ISC2, SANS, Microsoft, Cisco, Palo Alto, etc.
  3. Experience working cross-functionally with other teams to represent cybersecurity topics.
